LEV Testing
LEV Testing
LEV systems are usually found in work environments where workers are exposed to harmful contaminants, such as fumes, vapour and gas.
A LEV system works by:
- Extracting the air (including any contaminants) and moving it away from the workspace
- Removing the contaminants from the air
- Cleaning the air and return it to the workspace if required
If you are an employer and have a LEV system in place, you will need to get it tested every 14 months, or more frequently in some cases.
Why is LEV testing needed?
It’s the law
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations state that employers must control risks from harmful substances such as dusts and fumes and vapours.
The COSHH regulations requires any control measure (a LEV system) put in place, must be maintained in an efficient state, in effective working order and kept in good condition.
The regulations also specify that test records should be kept including details of any repairs carried out as a result of the examinations and tests, for a minimum of 5 years.
Therefore, is a statutory requirement that your system is tested at least once in every fourteen months and, in some situations more frequently.
To maximise its performance
Over time, LEV systems can lose their effectiveness due to a number of factors including deterioration of parts, build-up of dust inside ducts or leaks in the ducting. Therefore, if you have one installed in your workplace, you should get it tested regularly ensure that it is operating effectively and is in good condition.
What does a LEV test involve?
Once the test has been completed, if it has passed you will receive a full report with all of the relevant information about your LEV system and the inspection performed that you can keep, conforming with regulations.
